I work in my studio in Hampshire, having always painted and drawn. Art training includes life drawing at Chelsea Art College, colour study under Marian Bohusz-Schisko and five years Fine Art Appreciation and Practice (Farnham, BA Hons). We are increasingly aware of our environment, including outer space, largely resulting from space exploration.. To me this also is a form of ‘landscape’, from which I derive images on which to base paintings. NASA, Hubble and the Cambridge Observatory are prime sources of the phenomena and objects of cosmic Space, such as nebulae, comets, orbits , planets etc. all within a possibly expanding universe. I abstract and experiment from these, sometimes based on specific features (“Cygnus A”, “Red Giant..”, “Hubble View”…), and sometimes pure imaginings (“Nebula Feminana” (series), “Liftoff”, “Heavens Above”…) Other subjects from which I abstract include terrestial landscape and the sea - the Pyrennees, southern France and the Med, experimenting to exploit and explore values such as colour, space, scale, composition … (in my case). And, of course, the ‘strays’ - “Toeing the Line”, “Birth”, “Volcano Monsarrat”… Most of my paintings (there are many) are in oil on canvas, some on wood panel, with gesso, varnish, foil, and ranging in size from small on wood (20 and 30 cms.) to 90, 120 and 150 cms. (favourites), and a few to 240 cms. maximum dimension. Come and see them! |
